Appearance

Long-jawed Orb Weavers show varied forms but share long legs and slender bodies, measuring 1.2 to 25 mm. Leg I stands longest, with enlarged chelicerae in males. They have three claws and eight eyes in two rows. Some, like the Orchard Spider, cling lengthwise to twigs with extended legs.

Habitat and Range

These spiders occupy meadows near water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and swamps, on low branches and reeds. The range spans the United States and southern Canada. Species like the Orchard Spider favor eastern US woodlands.

Behavior

They spin orb webs with concentric circles and 12-20 spokes, angled from vertical to horizontal on tree branches. Primarily insect hunters, they rest by aligning along twigs or grass. Bites occur if threatened but pose no harm to humans.

Life Cycle

Limited details exist, but like other orb weavers, they lay eggs in sacs. Spiderlings disperse and mature over seasons. Adults live briefly, focusing on web-building and reproduction in warmer months.

Economic Impact

Neutral in economic terms, these spiders aid natural pest control by preying on insects in habitats. They cause no notable damage and support ecosystems without significant costs or benefits to agriculture.

This preserved specimen highlights the distinctive long jaws and orb webs, ideal for arachnid education and displays. Check it out on BugGuide! https://bugguide.net/node/view/1958
