The Ironclad Beetle is in the Family Zopheridae. While the Ironclad Beetle is found throughout the continental USA this species of Ironclad Beetle, Phellopsis porcata has been photographed by BugGuide© only west of the Rocky Mountians. The Ironclad Beetle feeds on fungus of rotten wood. It gets its name from its very hard shell. One species of the Order is used live in Mexico as pendants forming a living brooch called a ma’kech.
