Appearance

The Virginia Tiger Moth adult measures 32-52 mm in wingspan. Forewings show white with scattered black flecks and a faint dark line near the tip. Hindwings appear pure white. The abdomen features bright yellow markings dorsally, setting it apart from similar species. Caterpillars vary widely in color, from beige and yellow to dark red-brown or black. They sport long, soft setae, some extending over three body segments, with white spiracles and often a central long hair per tuft.

Habitat and Range

This moth thrives across North America, proving more common in eastern regions. It inhabits yards, gardens, bottomlands, woodlands, and forests. These diverse settings offer plentiful host plants and shelter for all life stages, supporting its broad distribution from Canada to Mexico.

Behavior

Caterpillars actively feed on low-growing plants, woody shrubs, and trees, favoring common milkweed as a primary host. This diet aids sequestration of plant defenses. Adults emerge as nocturnal fliers, drawn to lights and nectar sources. They mate soon after eclosion, with females laying eggs in clusters on foliage.

Life Cycle

The cycle begins with eggs laid in batches on host leaves. Larvae hatch and feed voraciously from spring through fall, appearing mature from May to November. They pupate within silken cocoons on the ground or in debris. Adults emerge in late spring to summer, completing one to two generations annually in temperate zones.

Economic Impact

The Virginia Tiger Moth remains neutral economically, as caterpillars cause minor defoliation in gardens without major crop losses. Their presence in landscapes supports pollinator food webs, offering subtle benefits through biodiversity. No widespread pest control needs arise.

This preserved specimen highlights the variable caterpillar setae, ideal for moth education and collections. Check it out on BugGuide! https://bugguide.net/node/view/498
